Community Action Helps Stroke Victim Keep His Home

J.D. is a veteran who was working full time until he suffered a stroke and heart attack that placed him on FMLA (Family & Medical Leave Act). This ultimately led to his termination of employment when his leave extended beyond 12 weeks, leaving him and his wife in financial trouble.

J.D.'s job was the only source of income for him and his wife. They used all of their savings to keep things going and began to sell personal items. They also applied for his VA benefits, but they still have not been approved. The family had exhausted all avenues of support and found themselves in default on their mortgage for the first time ever.

This brought them to Highland County Community Action Organization for assistance with their mortgage. The foreclosure coach not only got them mortgage assistance through the Restoring Stability assistance program, but connected them with Safelink for phone assistance, got them Food Stamp benefits, PIPP Plus (Percentage of Income Payment Plan) benefits and HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) to help with utility payments, as well as Medicaid to help with medical bills.

The family went from being on the verge of losing everything to being safely and securely housed with all basic needs being met.
